Hartz IV Generations? Fatalism and present time orientation in poor families

In this project, the development and effects of present time orientation and fatalism in intergenerational interactions of poor families will be investigated.Two findings can be pointed out in relation to the intergenerational transmission of action orientations in poor families: First, fatalism and present orientation as poverty-typical patterns of interpretation are stated almost unanimously. These interpretation patterns are relevant not only for the individual but also intergenerational perpetuation of poverty. Second, the socialization processes apply in the family as a key transmission mechanism. Both have not been studied in depth, yet: Although socialization conditions and their relation to the situation and the attitudes of future generations are studied the immediate processes of transmission in the everyday world of families are hardly the subject. So, missing the investigation of the common constitution of the orientations in familial interactions and, on the other hand, is a more detailed empirical study of the patterns of interpretation pending. Hence, 10 qualitative family discussions with long-term unemployed families and with families whose children are not long-term unemployed will be conducted, using sequence-analytical and objective-hermeneutic methods to reconstruct the development and impact of the action orientations.
