Understanding Visuality in Global Politics. A Multidisciplinary Conversation on Theories, Methodologies and Research Practices

The research network Understanding Visuality in Global Politics will establish a multidisciplinary conversation about visual theories, methodologies and research practices. We are planning four workshops in order to provide the intellectual space for such an exchange. The network participants will cooperatively publish two edited volumes, one in German and one in English. The network consists of 12 researchers from Germany and the Netherlands specialized in political science and International Relations. The participants are experienced in working with visual artefacts and representations and agree on the central goal, that a multidisciplinary conversation is necessary, in order to advance the theoretical, methodological, and research practical knowledge about visuality in global politics. National and international scholars from disciplines such as philosophy, art history, visual anthropology, visual sociology, media and cultural studies will join the workshops in order their expertise and research experiences with the network members. The final workshop is supposed to take place in Berlin, where the single chapters will be presented by the authors. The workshop will be accompanied by an exhibition to sensitize societal actors and citizens for the political consequences visual representations (for example terrorism, migration and climate change) might have.
