Medieval Christian art in 19th century . Research and reception

The research project aims to clarify 19th century understanding of medieval church interior and furniture. During this time medieval church furniture and Christian art in Germany are researched, interpreted and publicly observed in a much broader way than yet appreciated. Depending on particular protagonists from an art historical-stylistic view differing perspectives can be observed, which are related to specific functional and historical contextualizing models of interpretation and periodization. Actors are kirchliche Kunstarchäologie (ecclesiastical archaeology) as a sub discipline of Christian archaeology, vaterländische Altertumskunde (patriotic antiquity studies) as forerunner of regional history and kirchliche Kunstpflege (ecclesiastical art care), which mainly is supported by Christian institutions and societies. In different emphasis historical interest is associated with efforts directed at the presence of 19th century, e.g. concerning the design of church interior, liturgical practice and formation of regional or national identity. A wide popularization is obtained by monographs, handbooks, periodicals and publicly accessible collections and museums, which illustrate the relevance of medieval church furniture and Christian art for 19th century historical culture.
