本研究の目的は、上代から近代に至る通時的な視点に立ち、各時代の代表的作品に出現する形容詞について、その語義と用法を分類し、その分類結果を反映させた語義・用法データベースシステムを構築し、用法（終止用法、連体用法、連用用法）の分布の傾向について考察し、上代から近代に至るまでの語義と用法の歴史的変遷について明らかにすることである。2022年度の実績としては、前年度に引き続き、「深い」「憂い」「恥ずかしい」「高い」「安い」「難い」「痛い」「悲しい」「良い」「悪しい」の10語について、平安時代と鎌倉時代の用例を対象として『日本国語大辞典』の語義分類に基づいて語義を分類し、用法の分類基準を作成し，通時的変化を観察した．その結果、語義分類の時代間比較では、(1)「深い」「憂い」「高い」「難い」は時代間の差がほとんどない、(2)「恥ずかしい」は平安時代には［気詰まり］や［気おくれ］が多用されるのに対して、鎌倉時代になると大幅に減少し［決まりが悪い］が主流となる、(3)「痛い」は平安時代では［精神的苦痛］が多いのに対して、鎌倉時代は［肉体的苦痛］がほとんどである、(4)「悲しい」は平安時代、鎌倉時代とも［嘆かわしい］が主だが、鎌倉時代では［興味深い］の意が新たに生じている、(5)「良い」は平安時代では［正当・善］［適当・相応］が主なのに対して、鎌倉時代には［優れる］が圧倒的に多くなる、などが明らかとなった。用法分類の時代間比較では、(1)「深い」「憂い」「高い」については時代間の差はほとんどない、(2)「恥ずかしい」では、終止形終止法と連用修飾（副詞法）の比率が鎌倉時代に増える、語幹形容動詞生成（「恥ずかしげなり」）が減る、(3)「安い」では、平安時代ではほとんどが助動詞接続であったのに対し、鎌倉時代になると連体用法と連用修飾（副詞法）が増える、などが明らかとなった。
