データ収集による計量的調査において、小学校英語教科書７社と中学校英語教科書６社に導入されている語彙数では以下の結果が出た。小学校英語教科書で扱われている語彙数：Blue Sky elementary(BSE): 543語 Crown Jr.(CWJ): 507語、Here We Go!(HWG): 592語、New Horizon elementary(NHE): 630語、Junior Sunshine(JS): 637語、Junior Total English(JTE): 514語、One World Smiles(OWS): 621語。７社平均の取り扱い語数は578語（以下、平均値は小数点以下四捨五入）で、取り扱い語数が一番多いJSと一番少ないCWJでは130語の差がある。中学校英語教科書で扱われている語彙数：Blue Sky(BS): 1735語、Here We Go!(HWG): 2304語、New Crown(NC): 2164語、New Horizon(NH): 1,683語、One World(OW): 1773語、Sunshine(SH): 1949語。６社平均の取り扱い語数は1,935語で、取り扱い語数が一番多いNCと一番少ないNHでは481語の差がある。一方、中学校英語教科書の本文で扱われている延べ単語数は、１年生で６社平均1,560語、２年生で3,096語、３年生で3,445語となっている。最小値と最大値の差は、１年生でHWG1: 1,046語対 OW1: 2,088語、２年生でHWG2: 2,754語対 OW2: 3,720語、３年生でSH3: 2,914語対 NC3: 4,278語となっている。３年間では、BS1～3: 6,915語対 NH1～3: 9,456語であった。今後、これらの語彙・文章の内容を分析・整理し、必要な用例を抜き出し、教員養成・研修に活かせる英語の背景知識の体系化を進める。さらに、英語の背景知識として、外すことのできない英語文学に関して、イギリスの女流短編作家であるキャサリン・マンスフィールドの文体的特徴から、申請者がこれまでに収集した用例を使い、中学校学習指導要領にある文法項目との使い方と比較して、前置詞や接続詞のような単純な文法項目でも、使い方の工夫によって、豊かな文章表現を生み出すことを研究論文にまとめ、雑誌掲載予定である。
