项目摘要

今年度は、2つの異なる課題に着目することで、研究目的の達成を試みた。1つ目の課題は、米国における主要な人種・民族集団の間に見られる、住宅保有と過密住宅（同居者数が、物置や廊下を除く部屋の総数を上回る状態で、米国では社会福祉の古典的な尺度の1つとされている）に関する考察である。米国の社会調査データ、American Community Survey（ACS）を用いて、世帯レベルで見た割合（つまり、現在の住居は持ち家か否かを、世帯主のみが回答した場合の数値）と、個人レベルで見た割合（つまり、現在の住居は持ち家か否かを、そこに住む家族の該当者全員が回答した場合の数値）という2つの異なる住宅保有率の測定方法を比較検証した。考察の対象は非ヒスパニック系の白人、黒人、ヒスパニック、そしてアジア系アメリカ人で、ヒスパニックとアジア系アメリカ人については、主な民族集団別に分けた上での分析も試みた。現時点での分析結果によると、住宅保有率は分析単位を個人とするか世帯とするかによって、大きく異なってくることが判明した。これは、数多くの先行研究で取り上げられることのなかった核心的な問題で、米国におけるマイノリティの住宅保有率に対する理解を大きく前進させるものと言える。2つ目の課題は、テキサス州における日系人の功績と生活体験に関する調査である。今年度実施した現地調査では、第二次世界大戦期にテキサス州に存在した日系人の収容施設のいくつかを訪れ、モニュメントや案内板の内容を記録したり、今日でも確認可能な遺構を撮影した。また、19世紀前後に現地に渡った端緒期の日本人の暮らしについて、彼らの子孫である日系アメリカ人3世を数名特定し、1世と2世の時代について彼らから新しい情報を得ることが出来た。更に現地では、20世紀後半のテキサス州を知る、高齢の日本人移民数名に対するインタビュー等も実施した。
