项目摘要

本研究では、教育のデジタライゼーションと呼ばれる新たな時代における大学の価値形成のための単位制度の創造を追究することを目的としている。2年目の課題は、アメリカにおいて、学生の学修成果から教員の教育指導や行政の効率化への変化のプロセスの中で、学生の学びの多様化がどのような形で実践できるようになったのか。具体的には、エリートから大衆化さらにはユニバーサル化の過程にうまくマッチし、広く受容される要因あるいは普遍的な制度原理を明らかにすることであった。得られた知見は、次の通りである。（１）まず第１に考えられるのが、「経済性・効率性」の原理である。教育における無駄をなくし、学習意欲や学習プロセスの連続性を保障することである。（２）第２に、「多様性・柔軟性」の原理を挙げることができる。本来、選択制そのものが多様性や柔軟性を重要な要素としているため、そのコロラリーとして成立した単位制度もまた当然のことながら同様な原理を有する。（３）第３に、「個性化・自律性」の原理である。これは高等教育をより学生指向に導き、また教師や機関の自律性・独立性をも保障する原理である。単位制度はコースの選択制と結びついているため、比較的きっちりしたカリキュラムの場合より学生指向であり個性化を可能にしていることは指摘するまでもない。また、学生自身のペースで、パートタイムベースでも高等教育を追求して学位のための学習ができるメカニズムを提供している。また、単位制度の強さは機関相互のトランスファーにあるので、学生のやる気や能力に応じて機関間の移動を認め、個人の能力の限界まで発達させることができる。移動の自由と能力開発にも寄与するものとなっている。なお、当初は単位互換制はその目的とはされず、むしろそれは付随して利用されていたに過ぎなかった。
