本研究の目的は、将来的に「がん患者における、外見ケアによる治療予後の改善」を示すことを目指し、「外見ケアによる治療意欲の向上」を検証することである。2019年度まで開催してきた「ボランティアによる院内外見ケアサービス」の場を利用し、外見ケアを受けた患者群と受けない群での前向き比較研究を計画していたが、新型コロナウィルスの影響により、外見ケアサービス自体が提供できず、2021年度に引き続き、2022年度も調査の実施が困難であった。2021年度の当院がん相談支援センターへの相談件数をまとめたところ、1年間の総面談件数のうち、外見ケアに関する相談は34.0％であり、コロナ状況下でも、がん患者の外見ケアへのニーズは高いことが示唆された。2022年度もこの傾向は継続している。ウィッグ業者や美容師らへのインタビューでも、「コロナ状況下でも、外見ケアへのニーズは変わらず高い」という回答が多数であった。2022年度も、院内では感染対策としてボランティア等の活動中止が続いており、本研究は遂行できていないが、患者ニーズが高いことは明らかであったため、がん相談支援センターにおける外見ケアサービスの充実と提供をすすめた。また、当該年度は厚労省によるがん対策に関する指針の影響もあり、社会において「アピアランスケア」の重要性が一気に浸透した。本研究グループにも、セミナー等において市民や他の医療機関に対し、外見ケアのあり方や当院の取り組みを伝える機会が多く求められたため、その要請に応えた。
