One of the main tasks of German Philology is to replace methodologically obsolete and frequently unreliable 19th century editions of medieval German texts. Since the new editions of the historical Dietrich epics, Laurin, Rosengarten and Virginal have been published and/or prepared in Bremen during the last years, a new edition of Sigenot is desideratum in the research on medieval German heroic epic. The project aim is a new text edition, close to the manuscript and print traditions, of Älterer Sigenot and the versions of Jüngerer Sigenot, which can serve as a historically verified text basis for research on textual and transmission history as well as for literary history and interpretation.
