本研究は、フローベールの文学をロマン主義の批判と継承という歴史的な視点から再検討することを通して、「現代文学の先駆者」という従来の作家像に取って代わる、新たな作家像を構築することを目的としている。本年度は、東京と名古屋で開催された国際シンポジウム「ロマン主義と第二帝政期の文学」において、「フローベール、ミシュレと二つの革命」と題するフランス語の口頭発表を行った。本発表は、日本語で以前発表した論文のフランス語版であるが、来日したフランス人の研究者から好意的かつ建設的な意見をもらうなど、非常に有意義な発表となった。また、このシンポジウムは、フローベールやボードレールを中心とする第二帝政期の文学をロマン主義をキーワードとして読み直すことを目的としており、本研究と同じ方向性を持つものと言える。そのため、このシンポジウムに参加し、他の発表者と議論を交わしたことは、本研究をより広い文脈に位置付け、その意義を再考する上でも、深い意味を持った。また、本年度は、フランスの現代作家ミシェル・ウエルベックの最新作『滅ぼす』の翻訳に取り組んだ（共訳書として河出書房新社から刊行予定）。ミシェル・ウエルベックは本研究の直接的な対象ではないが、ロマン主義の作家たちが抱えていた危機の意識を現代に受け継ぐ作家であり、とりわけこの最新作にそのロマン主義的な部分は顕著に表れている。翻訳を通して現代におけるロマン主義の意味を再考できたことは、本研究の進展にも間接的に資するものであった。
