项目摘要

本研究課題は、その統治に関してこれまで本格的研究がなされてこなかったロンドンの東部郊外を対象に、地域住民とロンドン市の諸団体による貧困や災害といった様々な問題への対処を分析することで、統治の具体相とその変化を明らかにすることを目的とする。令和４年度は、令和３年度から引き続き、地域エリートの人的関係の結節点としての学校の分析を行い、イートン校とウェストミンスタ校を対象としたその成果の一端を、岩井淳、道重一郎編『複合国家イギリスの地域と紐帯』所収論文「複合国家と教育―イングランドの文法学校が果たした役割」で公刊した。ここで明らかにした学校の同窓関係を通じた紐帯が、ロンドン郊外統治に活用された可能性を探る目的で、郊外に位置するハイゲート校の理事や生徒に関する史料の収集を、夏季と春季の二度の海外現地調査の機会に行った。また春季の海外調査においては、学校だけではなく救貧院の運営を通じて構築された地域エリート間の協力関係が、郊外統治を下支えしていた可能性を考察する目的で、ロンドン東部郊外に存在した小間物商カンパニーなどが運営する複数の救貧院の史料を収集した。今後、収集史料の分析を進めるとともに、ミドルセックス州の治安判事としてロンドン市内だけでなく郊外地域の統治に関わったと考えられるロンドン市の法律顧問官などのすでにリストアップしている郊外統治に関わる何人かの人物とそれら学校や救貧院のチャリティ活動との関係性を明らかにしていきたい。
