今年度は、実施予定であった現地調査が、調査対象者の状況と新型コロナウィルスの影響により実施できなかったため、まずその補填をするべく、現地の新聞記事や文書資料などを可能な限り収集しながら、調査内容と現在状況との対応関係を検討した。次に『東西蝦夷山川地理取調圖』に記される地名を全てを整理し、その総数が9385であることが判明した。同図における「丙辰以後の開路」およびその他の道と、道沿いに分布する地名との関係性（関係性の有無、地名の意味との関係性）や、同じ水系沿いに分布する地名の意味傾向や特徴、特に海岸近辺に見られる黒い草地のような描写と地名との関係性、蝦夷屋と道との位置関係、湖の外周地名および池内に付された地名の意味の傾向、海上に書かれた和語も含めた地名と周辺環境・状況の特徴、「丙辰以後の開路」とその他の道の差異、道の始点と終点や交差する地点付近の状況や地名の特徴、泊り宿番屋の周辺状況の傾向、運上屋とその周辺環境の傾向、内陸における温泉表記と周囲の状況との関係、内陸の和語表記と周辺環境の特徴、川の始点と終点に当たる場所の地名の特徴、会所・陣屋・舟澗とその周辺状況、および地名との関係、同名地名の場所環境の特徴を調査しているところである。現在までのところ、和人が作成した蝦夷地に関する名所案内記の記載内容とも合わせると、少なくとも和人は蝦夷地の各場所を「資源供給地となりうるか否か」という視点から評価する傾向が高いことが判明している。
