東地中海の沿岸部に存在したビザンティン帝国史には、イスラーム勢力との抗争や聖画像破壊運動によって、初期(7世紀まで)と中・後期(8世紀以降)の間に史的断絶が存在する。この時期に建築活動の担い手は建築家から経験則に基づく工匠たちへと移行した。本研究は史料の残されていない初期から中期ビザンティン時代の社会的な変遷を明らかにする一つの鍵として残された建築に着目するものであり、特に工匠たちの経験的な知見において最も基礎的な要素と位置づけられる寸法体系に着目する。中期以降の寸法体系の実態が精査されてこなかった地方部において、異なる首都との関係性を有していたカッパドキア・クレタ島・キプロス島の三地域の教会堂群を実測し、地方部と首都の寸法体系を比較・検討することによって中期ビザンティン帝国全土の尺度を体系的に明らかにする。その 成果はビザンティンの地方部における知識の伝達の実態とそれに首都が果たした役割を提示するものでもある。三年目となる本年において、新型コロナウィルスのパンデミック以降、初めての現地調査が可能となった。それでもただちに予定通りに現地調査が可能となったわけではなく、現地の様子を伺いながらすこしずつ調査地を選定せざるを得なかった。しかし、そうした状況下で状況の安定していたギリシャを中心に、トルコとアルバニアの三カ国において現地調査し、44の教会堂の調査を行った。それらの教会堂のうちのいくつかについては写真測量を中心とした 3 次元計測を行った。
