In the past years Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) has emerged as a novel form of user-generated content. VGI involves active generation of geo-data for example in citizen science projects, in the form of passive collection of data via the user’s location-enabled mobile devices. In addition, there are more and more sensors available that sense our environment with ever greater detail and dynamics. The interpretation and visualisation of such information is challenging because of the large heterogeneity of the underlying multi-source data and the requirement of considering social context factors. The German Research Foundation (DFG) has initiated a Priority Programme „VGI: Interpretation, Visualisation and Social Computing“, which supports interdisciplinary research projects related to this topic. The usage of these new information sources are influenced by the specific characteristics of the underlying data, such as real-time availability, event-driven generation, and subjectivity, all with an implicit or explicit spatial reference. For the information society, these data can support a variety of applications for the solution of a broad number of societal challenges e.g. in the fields of environment and disaster management, health, transport or citizen participation. The priority programme aims to provide a scientific basis for utilising the potential of VGI- and sensor data. The three research pillars of the 1st phase have been slightly modified and will provide the frame for the 2nd phase, namely “Information Retrieval and Analysis of VGI”, “Geovisualisation and user interactions related to VGI” and “Active participation, social context and privacy awareness”. The collaborative research potential especially emerges at the intersection of these three domains. Therefore, funded project will address at least two of the above research domains. Of particular interest is also the link between social behaviour and technology during the collective collection, processing and usage of VGI. This includes e.g. the consideration of different acquisition and usage contexts, the evaluation of subjective information, as well as ensuring privacy aware data processing. Results of the collaborative research within the priority programme will be made available through the VGI-repository the sustainable public platform with access to benchmark data, VGI related software tools, documentations and publications.
