野生ボノボの調査地を新規開拓し、研究を軌道に乗せるという非常に挑戦的な試みに取り組んでいる。ボノボ生息域の最西端、コンゴ民主共和国バリ地区の野生ボノボ2集団を主対象とし、森林-サバンナ混交環境における野生ボノボの行動研究をおこなう体制を整えてきた。すでにカウンターパートとなる現地NGO・研究機関と協議を進め、MOUを締結し、現地協力者の力を借りながら野生ボノボ集団の人付けを進め、個体識別に成功している。ただし、コロナ禍の影響で、日本人が現地に渡航しての研究は2020年から中断していた。今年度は、2名の研究分担者が3年ぶりに渡航することができ、現地での研究再開に向けて準備をおこなった。野生ボノボ個体の確認とともに、現地カウンターパートとの交渉・現地アシスタントとの今後の方針打ち合わせ等をおこなった。対象集団の個体数が減少しているため、新たな人付け群での研究の可能性も検討した。また、これまでに現地協力者とともに収集した現地情報、植生データ、およびボノボの行動・遊動域データを入手し、分析を進めている。トラップカメラによるビデオデータの分析も進めており、今後の詳細な行動データの蓄積・分析により、野生ボノボの乾燥環境への適応、および社会行動の変化を明らかにしたい。また、依然コロナ禍の影響が残っており海外渡航に制約があったため、飼育ボノボ（および比較対象としてチンパンジー）を対象とした観察・実験研究をおこない、野生でみられる行動を認知科学的視点から理解するアプローチ・および今後の野生個体を対象としたフィールド実験の予備実験もおこなった。これら飼育下の研究と自然環境下での研究をシームレスに結ぶ研究手法の開発をおこなっている。
