项目摘要

『万葉集』巻二挽歌収載の「和銅四年歳次辛亥、河邊宮人姫嶋松原嬢子屍悲嘆作歌二首」（228・229）について、前年度に引き続き考察を加えた。前年度は、『万葉集』収載の入水死した伝承上の女性を悼む歌や、「屍を見て」歌われる行路死人歌の表現と比較し、行路死人歌は死者の「屍」が「寝（な）せる」「臥（こ）やす」など生者が眠る様に喩えて歌われるのに対し、当該歌は「嬢子屍」が難波潟に「沈む」と生々しく歌う点が散文的であり、ここに当該歌の詠歌意図があると考察した。今年度の研究では、当該229番歌の漢字「沈」字が示す意味について、更に検討を加えた。『類聚名義抄』等の古辞書や『万葉集』の歌および散文部分に於ける「沈」字、記紀に於ける「沈」字の全用例を検討したところ、「沈」には「水底に沈む」意は認められるものの「沈」字だけで死を直接表すものはなく、入水死を表す場合は必ず「沈没」「沈～死」と表記される。また『万葉集』や記紀に於いて、散文部分では「沈没」「沈～死」と入水死が示されていても、同様の内容を歌に於いては「潜（かづ）く」と歌うのが当時の日本人の知的文化水準に則した表現であることが導き出された。よって、「嬢子屍」を「潜く」ではなく「沈む」と歌う当該歌は、歌い手が「嬢子屍」の海底に沈む様に遭遇して作った歌であることを明らかにした。また、228歌に歌われた「妹が名は千代に流れむ」という表現の分析から、当該歌の歌い手の人物像について考察を加えた。挽歌に於いて死者の名が後世に伝わると詠むことは死者への鎮魂表現であるが、「名を流す」は官人的発想に基づく漢語表現であり、死者を讃美しながらも遺族や聞き手と「しのひ」を共有する表現ではないことから、歌い手は路傍の死者の「屍」を目にして丁寧な埋葬と慰霊を求める時代の要請に基づき、官人寄りの視点から歌われた平城京遷都時代の新しい挽歌であることを考察した。
