採択初年度はコロナ禍により海外出張ができず、各自が可能な限り国内での調査を行うととともに文献資料を収集するに留まった。そのような状況下でも2021年12月19日には全メンバーが筑波大学に集合し研究集会を開催、研究課題について情報共有することができた。当該年度の各自の研究実績は以下の通りである。研究代表者の林みちこはイギリスに留学した洋画家による日本画制作について調査を進め、特に石橋和訓が在英期に制作した日本画作品を分析した。また日本美術院を創設した岡倉覚三の1910年頃の著述を精査し、絵画におけるモダニズム批評への接続を考察した。研究分担者の下原美保は大英博物館所蔵のやまと絵コレクションに見られる住吉派の絵師に関する調査を進め、中でも住吉派出身の日本画家山名貫義などの画稿や作品の所在を確認するなどの調査結果を得た。研究分担者の小野文子はこれまでヴィクトリア朝期を調査対象としてきたが、その前後に時代範囲を広げ、19世紀初頭から日英博覧会が開催されエドワード朝が終わりを迎える20世紀初頭にかけての日本美術・工芸品に関わる記事を収集した。その中で、主に英国の定期刊行物に発表された文献約150点を資料コレクションとしてまとめ、解説文を日英バイリンガルで執筆した。研究分担者の加藤弘子は諸派の受容と現代日本画の展開に関する資料を収集した。狩野派を中心に、大英博物館の日本絵画コレクションの中核をなすウィリアム・アンダーソンとアーサー・モリソン、キュレーターのローレンス・ビニヨンの流派観を確認した。また、東京美術学校の歴史と日本画・洋画の技法面から、日本画の展開について論点を整理した。研究分担者の山本浩之は制作者の立場から古い和紙標本、昭和初期頃の技法書等の資料収集を進め、実際の日本画制作における制作過程、描法、画材の研究および日本美術院所属作家からの制作過程や技法の聞き取りを行った。
