本年度は、喜界島（大島郡喜界町）において戦跡の現状確認の調査を行った。喜界島には1944年に海軍の飛行場が設置された（現在の喜界空港）。そこは沖縄方面に向かう特攻機が整備・給油を行うために立ち寄る等の中継地的な役割が与えられていた。特攻機の拠点になったことから、その周辺地域を含めて複数回にわたって空爆を受けたという。現在、喜界空港の周辺には飛行場に関連する様々な戦跡（「戦闘指揮所跡」や「掩体壕」など）が一部見学可能な形で残されている。中には保存状態が良好ではないものも確認されたため、今後どのように保存していくのかが課題であるといえる。また、喜界島の戦跡に関する調査も体系的に行われてきたとは言い難いことが見えてきたため、情報の整理は急務であると考えている。一方で、今年度の調査も新型コロナウイルス感染症の感染拡大により、住民に対する聞き取り調査を十分に行えなかった。喜界島での調査では、地元のガイドの方から戦跡の保存状況のほか、空襲時の避難の実態について貴重なお話を伺うことができた。だが、空港のほど近い集落の状況しか伺うことができなかったため、今後更なる調査を進めていく予定である。また、近年では島内でも戦跡に対する関心が高まっていることが確認されたので、その動向を今後も注視していくつもりである。なお、今年度はVRを用いたワークショップを奄美大島で開催する予定であったが、コロナ等の事情により開催できなかった。来年度の課題としたい。
