本研究は、①鑑賞者が文字を介して書記情報から得ている言外の意味について、②創造的な書記表現についての解釈行為と審美的な鑑賞行為の相違点について、文字を介して視覚・聴覚・言語情報など様々な意味が交差する場である日本語の書記言語について認知記号論的な視座から考察を行うものである。2019年度は、認知言語学の概念融合理論(Fauconnier and Turner 2002)及び心理言語学の特徴比喩の認知モデル（Kusumi 1987）を援用して、欧米の視覚詩の認知プロセスを分析し、その成果を2019年8月の第１２回国際視覚記号論学会に発表した。（題目：An artistic strategy for visual poems: emphasis on the similarity）この学会は、記号論の研究を人間の認知の研究とどのように繋げて発展させていくかということが議論の中心となり、今後の研究の方向性を考える上で非常に有意義な意見交換を行うことができた。日本語の文字を使った作品や表現についても認知モデルをベースとした解釈プロセスの分析の結果に対して、質問紙を用いた統計的調査や眼球運動測定（2019年度の研究費で2020年初めに眼球運動測定装置を導入）などの実験的手法によって得られたデータを照らし合わせ、その検討を行う準備を進めていた。具体的には、この研究で用いた作品例について、眼球運動測定装置を使って視線の経路や停留時間について調べ、分析をさらに発展させていく予定であったが、新型コロナウィルスの感染拡大により、被験者を集めた実験の遂行計画が難しくなったため１年間研究期間を延長した。2022年度は、論文『「ことばと思考」再考ー日本語の書記言語の認知モデル構築に向けて』において、日本社会における「障害」という語彙の「害」の文字の使用についての議論を分析し、書記言語を認知する際に意味や印象を左右する要素の複雑さについて論じた。
