本研究の目的は、第二言語学習者が目標言語で産出する談話の中で登場人物を指し示す際に、言語的文脈情報か非言語的文脈情報、またはそのどちらも使用して指示対象の談話内顕著度を測るのかを調査することである。コンピューター上に呈示される説明文からの言語的文脈情報と絵からの視覚的文脈情報を操作することによって、日本人英語学習者が英語談話産出中に使用する指示表現に違いが出るかを分析した。本年度の主な研究計画は、昨年度までに行った日本人英語学習者のデータ分析を再確認した上で、実験から得られた新たな知見を論文にまとめることであった。まず、4月に新たな研究機関へ異動したため、論文執筆に必要な物品を購入して研究環境を整えた。その後、機関内紀要に論文を投稿し、査読を経て広く成果を公開した。多くの先行研究は、英語学習者が絵本の内容を英語で口頭説明したものや、与えられたトピックに関して自由に書いた英作文をもとにして談話展開と指示表現使用の関連を調査したが、本研究は文脈文と絵からの情報量を操作する実験形式を用いたことで、従来の手法では知り得なかった文脈情報の使用方法を明らかにすることができた。この成果をもって、第二言語学習者による指示表現産出メカニズムの解明に一歩近づくことができたと考える。しかし、昨今の社会状況により英語母語話者からのデータ収集が進まず、有識者との議論も十分ではなかったため、次年度に海外出張を行なって本研究課題を完遂したい。
