目的本研究では、1. 脳機能イメージングを用いて同定する効用の脳内表現に基づいて、客観的、科学的に効用の個人間比較をおこなう操作的な方法を構築することを目的とする。また、直観によって他者の効用を個人間比較することが正当化される条件下で、第三者の直観による効用の判断が効用の脳内表現に基づく指標による判断と一致するかどうかを調べることで、提案指標の妥当性を検証する。さらに、2. 社会経済的状況の異なるグループから実際に得られた効用の指標に基づき、グループ間で異なる適切な重み付けをして実験謝金を分配する“所得再分配”をおこなう。結果前帯状皮質及び前頭前野腹内側部のシグナル変化率が経済学の意味での効用に相関していることが示された。1円あたりの前帯状皮質及び前頭前野腹内側部のシグナル変化率は世帯所得の低い参加者の方が大きいことが分かった。世帯所得が中央値以下の人からなるグループと世帯所得が中央値より大きい人からなるグループの1円あたりの効用の平均値に対する第三者（公平な観察者）の直観調べて、世帯所得が中央値以下の人の1円あたりの効用は世帯所得が中央値より大きい人のそれよりも、2倍程度大きいと判断されることが分かった。公平な観察者の直観と脳指標が一致しているかどうかベイズ統計を用いて検証し、両者が一致しているという結果を得た。これらにより、脳活動に基づく効用の個人間比較手法が人間の感覚の延長という特徴を備えていることが示唆された。提案指標を用いて社会経済的状況の異なるグループから実際に得られた効用値に応じて金銭を分配した。科学的な効用の個人間比較手法を分配問題に適用した最初の事例を作ることができた。
