项目摘要

今年度は、クールベの円熟期ともいえる1860年代の作品を扱った。当該時期の画家は、自身が確立したレアリスム芸術の政治的な作用についてより深く思索し、実際に第二帝政の社会に対して芸術をもちいて積極的に働きかけようとした。本研究では当該時期における画家のアカデミスム絵画に対する取り組みの痕跡を読み解くことで、彼の新たな芸術的挑戦および社会参画の様相の解明を図った。具体的には、サロンから落選した《ウェヌスとプシュケ》（消失）と対照的に好評を得た《女とオウム》（1866年、メトロポリタン美術館）の二作の裸婦像に注目し、各作品における画家の企図の類似点および相違点を検討した。まず画家の書簡を再調査し、彼が第二帝政における独裁政治とアカデミスムを重ね合わせるように敵対視し、これを制作動機としながら先の二作品の前段階として《アモルとプシュケ》という未完の作品に着手していた点を確認した。これを基に《ウェヌスとプシュケ》および《女とオウム》作品における類似点および相違点を検討することで、アカデミスムを凌駕しようとする円熟期における彼の意欲的な姿勢を照射することができた。《ウェヌスとプシュケ》に関しては、画家自身の言説と実見した批評家による記録を精査し、彼が新たな試みとして敵対するアカデミックな技法に挑戦していた点に注目した。これまでは画家が挑発的な意図のもと制作した不道徳な作品とみなされた本作の企図を再考し、クールベのアカデミスムに対する葛藤を明らかにした。そして続く《女とオウム》の分析では、アカデミスム絵画の手法とレアリスムが融合した本作の特異性を分析し、前作との比較からこの作品が成功を収めた理由を考察した。アカデミスム的な技法さえも巧みに使いながら制作にあたった彼の試みを詳らかにし、円熟期においてクールベが芸術的野心と政治的信条を融合させ、ついに称賛を勝ち得た過程を提示した。
