项目摘要

本研究は、申請時の研究計画では、近世フランス外交の意味や意義を、とくにフランス革命前夜にあたるヴェルジェンヌ外務卿時代（1774年―1787年）に焦点をあて、仏・英・墺を中心にしたヨーロッパのみならずアメリカ、ロシア、オスマン帝国なども含めたグローバルな視点から捉えなおすものであり、また外務卿を中心とした外務卿府の実態を、外交書簡・司令書・認可書・会計文書などを基に、史料分析的な観点から検討するものであった。この研究は、現地フランスでの史料調査を念頭に置いたものであるが、昨年までは、コロナの問題でフランスへの渡航が不可能であったが、本年度は、3年ぶりに、3月にフランスへ渡航し、フランス外務省の外交文書館や国立古文書館の手稿史料を中心にした大量の外交文書史料調査や分析など、実証的な研究を行うことができた。具体的には、ヴェルジェンヌ外務卿に関する研究文献やこの時期の政治史・思想史に関する手稿文献を新たに多数入手し、研究テーマに関する総合的な研究に着手した。例えば、近年のフランス啓蒙思想・パトリオティズムに関する研究や、アメリカ独立戦争に関する研究に注目し、分析を進めている。また、この時期のアメリカの独立に関するヴェルジェンヌの外交政策や、オランダとの外交関係、特に、1780年代のオランダの革命運動との関係などに注目し、個別の考察を進めることができた。具体的には、1780年代のオランダのパトリオット革命との関係について、論文「旅する「共和政」とパトリオット・ジャコバン――フランスとオランダのジャーナリズムを中心に」を執筆した。またヴェルジェンヌ個人の思想や活動について、とくにフランス革命の中核となる「共和政」や「パトリオット」との関係に注目し、この面での新たな研究分析に、見通しを持つことができた。これらはわがくにには、本格的な研究がないテーマであり、研究価値が高いと考えられる。
