本年度は、自然界から超自然的な目的因を一掃し、自然界や人間社会に生起するあらゆる現象を自然的な原因の結果として説明する啓蒙思想に特有の「自然史」の論理に「歴史叙述」の観点から新たに分析を加え、今後の研究につながる以下の興味深い調査結果が明らかになった。1.歴史学、歴史哲学の祖として知られるヴィーコ、ヴォルテール、コンドルセら十八世紀の啓蒙思想家は、神の摂理など神学的な目的因ではなく、人間の本性に備わる進歩の能力としての「完成可能性」を歴史の動因と見なし、キリスト教の終末論的歴史観を世俗的な進歩史観によって置き換えた。だが、進歩の概念に基づいて社会や文明の発達を論じるいわゆる文明史のみを歴史と見なす近代歴史学において、人間や社会をも自然現象の連続線上で機械論的・決定論的に説明するディドロ、ドルバックらの唯物論思想は、「歴史叙述」と無縁な例外とされてきた。2.しかし、歴史のカテゴリーを進歩史観に基づいた文明史だけではなく自然界と人間社会の双方を対象とする自然史にまで拡張するならば、必然的な因果法則を前提とした哲学的推論によって諸制度や事象の発生を考察するディドロやドルバックの唯物論思想は歴史と決して無縁ではなく、因果論的な推論に基づく「哲学的歴史」という角度から彼らの「歴史叙述」を論じることは充分に可能である。3.ディドロ、ドルバックらフランスの唯物論者と同じく啓蒙期の進歩史観に基づく歴史叙述の例外とされるスコットランドの思想家ヒュームが、自らは懐疑論者を標榜しながら、『イギリス史』や『宗教の自然史』などの歴史著作に実質上の唯物論思想に基づく因果論的推論を適用している事実は、ディドロやドルバックの唯物論思想とヒュームの懐疑論思想の論理的近接性のみならず、彼らの「哲学的歴史」を「歴史叙述」として本格的に論じる可能性を我々に示している。
