本研究では冷戦後(主に1990年代以降)における日韓防衛交流・協力の軌跡を振り返り、その目的、成果と課題、進展と停滞の原因を探り、今後について展望する。研究対象の時期を1990年代、2000年代、2010年代に区分し、各期について、文献調査、年表作成を行いながら、関係者(政策実務者、研究者など)へのインタビューを実施し、関連する政策・論点をめぐり、日韓両国ならびに同盟国である米国の思惑などを調査し、事実を検証する。３年度目（令和４年度）は、新型コロナ感染症の状況を考慮して、研究会やインタビューはオンラインで実施しつつ、対面調査や現地調査（韓国出張）を部分的に再開し、各自で文献調査・収集などの作業も進めた。（１）研究会:日韓防衛交流・協力を説明するための枠組みを構築するため、各自の担当領域について研究報告を行った。特に第三の時期区分（2010年代）に関する検討を進めた。韓国側の保守系と革新系の政権交代の影響を改めて照射し、2010年代末の日韓安保危機に至った要因についても検討した。　（２）インタビュー:日本側と韓国側の防衛・国防担当の元実務者ならびに研究者の意見聴取、特に2010年代を中心に行った。韓国では保守系のみならず革新系の関係者を対象に調査を進めた。(３)文献調査:国内外の図書館・ネット上の文献調査・収集を進めた。日本国内では国立国会図書館や外交文書データベースの検討、防衛省の行政文書開示請求に基づくを文書収集を継続している。韓国では国家記録院、国立国会図書館、外交部外交史料館で文献収集を進めた。
