本研究は、国連により後発発展途上国とみなされるアジアの国々から、1990年代に政治体制の移行を経験したカンボジア、ミャンマー、東ティモール、ブータンを事例国として、当該社会の社会と環境、および住民の価値感の変容についての分野横断的な共同研究を実施する。研究プロジェクトの実施3年目は、前年度に続いて、新型コロナウィルス感染拡大による行動制限のもとで研究を実施した。プロジェクトのメンバーを集めた研究集会はオンラインで実施し、現地の研究協力者との打ち合わせやインタビューの一部もオンラインで実施した。しかし、本研究が課題とする対象国の社会体制の変容の総合的把握のためには現地調査が必要であった。よって、研究経費を翌年度に繰り越して、2年にわたって研究活動を展開した。現地渡航が不可能な状況が長期化したため、研究分担者による研究構想の発表を繰り返すだけでなく、共同研究のメンバー以外から対象国で調査経験をもつ研究者をゲストスピーカーとして招いたり、対象国の体制移行に関連した書籍を取り上げて合評会を行うなど工夫をした。そのなか、当初より共通関心としてきた民主化や市場経済化だけでなく、ICT技術の浸透によるDXの発達も対象国それぞれの社会文化変容の共通経験としてみられることなどについて新たに議論することができた。研究分担者による対象国での現地調査も、経費の繰り越しにより、ある程度の範囲で実施することができた。ミャンマーについては、2021年2月に発生したクーデタの影響で、計画していた調査の一部を行うことができなかった。
