本研究は、1830年代にオスマン朝からシリアの行政権を獲得したムハンマド・アリーが、同地で新たに作り出した支配機構の構造を解明し、それを通してシリアにおける彼の支配の「近代的性格」について批判的に検討することを目的とする。これを達成するために、エジプト国立公文書館所蔵のアラビア語文書史料群を主に利用した実証的研究を行う。本年度も研究実施計画に基づいて研究を進める予定であったが、新型コロナウイルスの世界的な流行によって、計画遂行に大幅な乱れ・遅れが生じてしまった。まず、今年度は6月末までエジプトでの史料調査を継続する予定であったが、コロナ禍に伴う文書館閉鎖によって調査が一切できなくなってしまった。一方で突如の空路封鎖によって日本に帰国することもできなくなったため、最終的に7月頭に封鎖が解除されて帰国するまでの3か月間は、エジプトでこれまでに収集した史料の整理を進めた。帰国後にはこれを基に研究成果の発信に努めた。本来であれば今年度中に科研費を利用してフランスでの史料調査も行う予定であったが、コロナ禍のために断念せざるを得なかった。そのため、科研費を英文校閲などの研究費用に利用しながら、英語論文を執筆すると同時に、2つの研究報告も行った。とはいえ、コロナ禍による図書館の利用制限などにより、今年度中に期待されたほどの成果は得られなかった。今年度の研究から得られた主な知見は次のようにまとめることができる。ムハンマド・アリーがシリアに新たに作り上げた支配機構は、構造的な側面ではシリアに既存のものと比べて大きな変化はなく、徹底された記録・報告・監視のような運用手法にこそ革新性が見られた。とはいえ、本格的な機構改革を抜きにした彼のシリア支配には、「近代的性格」というよりも、むしろ限られた改革によって同地の人的・物的資源の最大限の収奪を目指すという、植民地支配的性格が強く認められた。
