視覚的情報の言語化に関して、前年度までは、例えば色彩については「赤」「黒い」のような色彩語彙そのものの性質・実態を明らかにすることが当然の課題であった。一方、今年度は“複合型色彩表現”と総称する、色彩語彙に拠らない間接的・派生的な色彩の言語化方略についての研究が主であった。その成果を大別すると(1)直喩型の色彩・形状表現における媒体と趣意の選択条件の特定、(2)直喩による視覚的描写とは何かについての研究史の再解釈、（3）色彩の明度・彩度の言語化に現れる形容語の通言語的類型の提示、の3つである。(1)は、「トマトのような色の顔」のように、物体名を引き合いに出して色合いを描出する直喩的表現を取り扱ったものである。たとえる側（トマト）とたとえられる側（その顔）の取り合わせに何らかの条件があるかをコーパス調査で定量的に検討した結果、表面上は色彩の類似だけを述べるものであっても、形状も衝突しない物同士が選ばれる傾向があることが明らかとなった。一方、それと比べて、形状の類似を述べる場合に色彩への頓着は特にない（弱い）可能性も示唆された。(2)は、本来は(1)の分析手法の構築過程で派生的に得たものであるが、独立した刊行物に至ったため別途の成果とした。古典期以来の言語・修辞学において散在している直喩への言及を整理・再解釈し、直喩の形をとる言語表現の分析上の問題点を抽出した。(3)は、「濃い赤」「深い緑」のように色彩語彙の周囲に現れて明度や彩度を指定する形容語に着目したものである。日本語や英語、中国語を含む複数の言語において、どのような意味概念の語彙が汎用されているかをコーパス調査で抽出したうえで、言語間に共通してみられるパターンやその言語特有のパターン、特定の色にのみ出るパターンなどを類型化した。この課題は前年度までにもある程度進めていたが、学会が今年度まで延期したのを機に補強をはかった。
