本研究は、本研究代表者が独自に開発した「取締役の歩んできたキャリアで取締役の機能を代替する方法論」を用いて、取締役が選任されてから企業業績に結び付くまでの過程を段階的に考察することで、取締役がどのようにして企業業績を向上させるのかのメカニズムを解明することを目的としている。その目的を達する上で、これまでに、EDINET書類からテキストマイニングによって株主が求める取締役像を抽出すること、それに基づく取締役の分類、取締役のキャリアに基づく取締役の有する機能の整理、有する機能と取締役像の齟齬の確認、取締役像に基づく取締役会像と取締役の有する機能に基づく取締役会の機能の齟齬の確認といった一連の実証分析を実施した。また、それらに基づいて取締役会が企業業績向上に資する役割を検証した。さらに、これらの実証手法や検証手法に関する枠組みについても整理して論考を公表してきた。本研究は、感染症拡大の影響から成果発表の機会を多々失い、成果発表の時期が後倒しになったことによって研究で使用しているデータが過去のものとなってきたことにより、より新しいデータによって追加の検証を行う必要性に迫られている。検証に必要なデータの構築には莫大な時間を要するため、追加検証までは行えていない状況にある。それでも、令和4年度においては、追加検証に必要なデータの一部を構築し終えることができ、そのデータを使った追加検証の一端となる成果を公表するに至ることができた。
