项目摘要

今年度も海外調査を断念し、国内にある資料の収集・調査に集中した。国立国会図書館のご協力により、必要資料は概ね手元に保管することができた。収集した資料から順次その電子化を進めた。対象としている膨大な行政資料を電子ファイルとして保管することで、検索や保管の利便性が上がり、研究の効率化を図ることができた。これらの資料にはGHQ美術記念物課の日常業務を具体的に把握することができるものが多数含まれており、時系列を追って整理すると、シャーマン・リーが日本での短い任期中にどのような任務をこなしていたかがわかった。特に日本美術界の民主化が大きな任務の一つであったことが明らかになった。また、リーは占領軍の中で軍人ではないという難しい立場に立っており、(戦争中は海軍に入隊したが、この部署での任務中は民間人専門家として勤務）、GHQの他の部署や軍の上司と考えの相違が生じる経緯も追跡できた。関西の美術コレクターたちへのコレクション公開支援は、リーが力を注いだものだったが、頻繁な関西への出張や、コレクターたちへの手厚すぎる援助が問題となっている。また、法隆寺展開催や各地の日本人美術史家とのやり取りなど、貴重な一次資料を確認することができた。今年度発表したものは、ヨーロッパにおける同様のプログラムThe Monuments, Fine Arts, and Architecture Programと日本のArt and Monuments Divisionの活動とを比較し、日本のプログラムに特有の目的などをまとめたものとなった。
