本研究では、1949年に独立を果たしたインドネシア共和国の首都ジャカルタにおいて、1950年代から1960年代にかけて政府主導で進められた住宅地開発と関連する水管理事業に関する資料を、インドネシア大学工学部建築学科の建築史研究者とともに収集および整理を進めた。その結果、バンドンにある公共事業省の居住地開発研究所の図書室に保管されていた住宅関係の報告書類および雑誌、オーストラリア国立図書館所蔵のジャカルタ市の地図および法令、インドネシア国内の関係機関が発行した住宅史・都市史関係の文献を収集した。また、都市化と洪水対策の関係を分析するために、ジャカルタ首都圏における土地利用の変化および人口増加に関する統計資料も集めた。これまで明らかになったことは、１）居住地開発研究所において1960年代に庶民向けの住宅供給に関する調査研究が盛んになり、いくつかのタイプのモデル住宅が考案され、実際にジャカルタなどで建設されていた、２）1950年代から1960年代のジャカルタでは、主に独立によって増加した公務員や、都市開発で立ち退きにあった住民のための住宅地開発が進められた、３）住宅地開発と同時に頻発する洪水への対策として、計画的に排水区域が設定され、区域ごとに市街地からの雨水排水を一時的に貯留する貯水池がつくられた、などである。インドネシア国内では、特に独立直後の1950年代と1960年代の歴史資料が散逸しており、本研究でインドネシア人研究者との恊働により、「国民国家」形成期の住宅を模索する動きを示す資料の保管と整理ができた意義は大きい。また、インドネシア大学工学部建築学科でワークショップを開催し、資料を活用した今後の都市史および建築史への展開に関してインドネシアの協力研究者と意見交換することができた。
