项目摘要

本研究は、初期近代読者の思考体系を成型したコモンプレイス文化の文脈で、エドマンド・スペンサーとウィリアム・シェイクスピアを主とする英文学作品の分析を行っている。「コモンプレイス（commonplace）」とは古典由来の共有知を指し、初期近代ヨーロッパでは、演説において修辞効果を高めるための格言を指した。初期近代グラマースクールでは、ラテン語習得のためにコモンプレイスを利用した学習法が導入され、生徒たちは教科書を講読する際に格言表現を抜き出し、項目ごとに分類・リスト化したコモンプレイスを暗記するよう指導された。このコモンプレイスを利用した学習法は初期近代ヨーロッパの読者間で普及し、初期近代英文学作品にもその影響を見出すことができる。本研究は三部構成であり、初年度である2022年度は、第一部となるハムレット王子とアーサー王子の記憶構造とテーブル・ブックの研究に取り組んだ。テーブル・ブックとは、蜜蝋や石膏でコーティングされた紙や板のことで、インクをつけた金属ペンで引っ掻くことで、文字を書いたり消したりすることのできる学習補助具を指す。このテーブル・ブックは、グラマースクールの生徒が綴りを練習する際や、コモンプレイスを暗記する際に利用されていたと考えられている。作品分析ではスペンサーの『妖精の女王』第一巻及びシェイクスピアの『ハムレット』を取り上げ、登場人物であるアーサー王子とハムレット王子の記憶に関する言及が、テーブル・ブックを利用した学習プロセスを前提とした叙述であることを指摘した。コモンプレイス文化の観点より、アーサー王子はテーブル・ブックの模範的利用者として描出されているのに対し（QF I.viii.44）、ハムレット王子はテーブル・ブックの情報が消去可能であることを強調しており、コモンプレイスを軽視する現代的感覚を持ち合わせていると結論づけた（1.5.107-12）。

This study is intended to provide an analysis of English literary works in order to shape the thinking system of the early modern Chinese. "Common place" refers to the common knowledge of classical origin, the early modern times, and the rhetoric of speech.
