実施計画通り、2022年8月にJFK Library（ボストン）においてヘミングウェイの未発表原稿調査を実施した。調査対象としては、長編 True at First Light（1999), Under Kilimanjaro (2005), The Garden of Eden (1986)と短編4編を中心に、出版原稿から排除された手書き文章や、編纂された箇所の調査を実施した。原稿調査によって、有色女性表象と動物との交差性や、動物との一体視に関する描写が、編纂の過程でかなり削除されていたことが新たに判明した。有色女性と動物の交差性や混淆性は物語を読み解く主要な隠喩であり、脱人間中心主義的な要素が付加されることで、性的逸脱性を示す「官能性」や「再生」といった記号性が女性の身体に書き込まれている。ヘミングウェイ・テクストの動物表象に関して、自然と近しい存在としての野生動物と、相反する存在として檻やケージの中で人間に飼育される愛玩動物では、動物と関連して描き出される登場人物の表象にもたらす影響に相違が見られることが新たに判明した。野生動物とその否定性としての檻の中の愛玩動物という研究視点を導入し、鳥かごのカナリアが扱われる短編「贈り物のカナリア」を調査対象として追加した。2022年12月に、原稿分析の結果に基づいて、鳥かごのカナリアが隠喩として内包する閉塞性、抑圧、行き詰まりという観点から物語を再読し、日本ヘミングウェイ協会全国大会（於：九州大学西新プラザ）で研究発表を行った。プロジェクト1年目の研究を受けて、2年目は檻で飼育される愛玩動物を比較対象として、野生動物との混淆性が有色女性表象にもたらす「再生」や「官能性」などの動物表象の「生」にまつわる側面について考察を展開していく。
