项目摘要

後述の通り，令和4年度は妊娠・出産のために当初の計画通り研究を進めることができなかった。特に，大学の夏季休業を利用してアイルランドに渡航し，新しい史料を収集した上での研究を行う計画を延期せざるを得なかったため，国内でこれまでの研究成果をまとめて公表することに注力した。具体的には，令和4年12月に早稲田大学ナショナリズム・エスニシティ研究所主催で開催されたシンポジウム「知・権力・ナショナリズム」において，「1880～1930年代アイルランドの公立図書館における児童閲覧室と女性司書：ナショナリズムとジェンダーの視点から」と題した研究報告を行った。アイルランドの公立図書館においては，19世紀後半から女性の採用が始まる。女性職員は当初はカタログ整理やタイピングなどの補助的な業務に従事することが主であったが，徐々に司書として自律的な職務を行うようになり，その結果として司書職は女性化する。本報告ではその転機を1920年代の児童閲覧室の設置とそこでの女性専属司書の採用に見出し，時代背景としてのアイルランドの独立と，国内でのナショナリズムの高まりに結びつけた。同時に図書館司書が女性職化していった要因として，司書が一種の「ケアする職業」と考えられていた事実を指摘し，それは必ずしも当時のフェミニストたちの本意ではなかった可能性があるが，女性の職域を拡大する目的のために，フェミニズムがナショナリズムに「便乗」したとも考えられるのではないかと結論づけた。
