2018年度は6～7月にかけての2か月間アイルランドに滞在し，史料調査を行った。具体的にはアイルランド国立図書館，トリニティ・カレッジ・ダブリン図書館，ダブリン市図書館および文書館，フィンガル州文書館，北アイルランド公文書館，コーク市立文書館，リムリック市立図書館，ラウス州文書館を訪問し，主に各地域の公立図書館の委員会議事録を参照して女性と図書館の関係性についての総合的検討を行った。さらに図書館で勤務していた女性に関しては国勢調査を利用してプロソポグラフィ的な調査も行った結果，2018年度の研究で明らかになった点は以下の通りである。まず図書館利用者としての女性について，女性利用者の存在は女性閲覧室の設置やその中の蔵書，雑誌の選書など，図書館運営に大きく作用した。運営側も女性利用者の動向を頻繁に調査し需要に応えるよう工夫するなど，積極的に関わっていた。また，女性利用者は図書館を受動的に利用しただけでなく，希望する書籍のリクエストや職員の対応についてのクレームなどを述べ，図書館側でもそれらに対応している。さらに図書館職員としての女性について，ダブリンの公立図書館では司書を頂点とした厳格な職階体制がとられ，性別によって職務内容が分けられることが多かった一方で，地方都市や農村の公立図書館では司書がすべてを担当する上に適任の人物も少ないため，採用においても性別不問となることが多いなど，職員採用には大きな地域差が見られる。また地方都市や農村の公立図書館での司書採用の際には，前任司書の妻や娘であることが有利に働くことが多い。これは前任者の業務を補佐していた経験が加味されている上，特に地方都市や農村においては，司書は一種の家業的な性質が強かったとも推察される。本年度の研究については論文投稿の形で公刊を予定している他，追加で調査・分析を行い，将来的には単著の形でまとめることを検討している。
