学習者の実際のコミュニケーション活動における中間言語に焦点を充て、教室内でのオーセンティックなコンテクストでの言語習得のための意味交渉に注目し、談話分析を実施し、その量的分析(Nakatani,1998)及び質的分析(Nakatani,1999)を行い、インタラクションの有効な分析手法の開発や、それに基づく成果を検証した。この中で、会話調整(Modified Interaction)が言語習得に必要な条件であるという仮説に基づき検証を重ね、日本での英語学習者も、特定のタスクにおいては、ネゴシエーションにおける会話調整を実施することが確認された。会話調整は、学習者がコミュニケーションにおいて言語理解の困難に直面した時に導入され、学習者に理解可能なインプットを受け取る機会を多く提供する。また、話者がこれらを使用することで、聞き手は互いの理解を促進するために、理解可能なアウトプットを生成する機会を求められる。つまり、コミュニケーションをスムーズに行うための会話調整は、学習者にとって目標言語を習得する重要な要素といえる。この研究では、さらに学習者の意識をネゴシエーション行為に向けた、認知トレーニングの実施への方向づけが示された。具体的には、メタ認知ストラテジーを学ばせ、各タスクの前に、会話調整の構成要素を意識させ、タスク実行中に学習者自らその使用法をモニターし、積極的に使用させるよう導く。またタスク終了後には、ストラテジーノート等を書かせ、振り返りを行い、会話調整行為が定着するよう指導する。つまり、学習者を自立させ、各自が自然に、外国語習得の機会を積極的に求めるようなストラテジーの習得を目指すのである。このようなストラテジートレーニングを導入することで、次第に難易度の高いテーマを扱ったタスクでも、学習者同士がネゴシエーションを使って互いに補完し合い、理解可能なインプット及び、理解可能なアウトプットを経験する機会を豊富に得ることができよう。
