项目摘要

本研究の目的は、南北戦争を境に激変するアメリカに生きた詩人エミリ・ディキンスンが奴隷制反対論者ジョン・ブラウンをどのように表象しているかを分析することにより、ディキンスンの表現が時代の言葉と結びついていることを確認することである。同時代の詩人・作家たち(ホイットマン、メルヴィル、ソロー等)が強く反応した1859年ハーパーズ・フェリーにおけるブラウンの襲撃は、その後アメリカを戦争へと導くことになり、南北戦争と文学との関係で重要な位置づけにある。しかしこれまでブラウンの襲撃とディキンスンとの関わりについて深く議論されることがなかった。申請者はディキンスンが暮らしたマサチューセッツ州アマストにおけるブラウンの事件に関わる言説を調査するため、アマストカレッジ付属Frost LibraryおよびJones Libraryに赴き、1859年から戦争勃発直前1860年に限定していくつかの報道資料の収集にあたった。またその期間にアマストカレッジにて開催されていたEmily Dickinson International Annual Meetingにも参加し、特にディキンスンと南北戦争をめぐる著名な研究者でおられるFaith Barett先生およびCristanne Miller先生に直接お目に掛かり、申請者の抱えている疑問や問題点についてご意見を頂くこともできた。さらに、1859年11月のブラウンの事件がディキンスン家と深く関係のあった牧師たちによる説教や、ディキンスン家と親しかったS. ボウルズ編集のSpringfield Republicanにおける記事も手に入れることにより、アマストでのブラウンの扱いを把握するうえで貴重な機会を得ることができた。短期間の調査では特にJones LibraryにおいてMargaret Daikinさんに大変なご尽力があってこそ可能となったことを付記したい。こうした資料を分析・考察した成果の一部として10月に名古屋名工大にて開催された日本英文学会中部支部大会シンポジウム(司会・発表者)および2016年発行予定の共著『作者と読者と出版者のネットワークの拡大--近・現代英語圏文学の諸相』(音羽鶴見書店)を現在の段階で形とすることができたものをご報告したい。

The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between the two countries. Poets and writers of the same era ( The first is to discuss how to deal with the problem. The applicant was asked to report on the events in the Frost Library and Jones Library from 1859 to 1860 Emily Dickinson International Annual Meeting was held in Beijing in 1998. The meeting was attended by Mr. Faith Barett, a distinguished researcher, and Mr. Cristanne Miller. In November 1859, the events of the family and the relationship between the clergy and the family were discussed. The Springfield Republican journal is a collection of articles that have been published in the United States since 1989. A short-term survey of the Jones Library by Margaret Daikin has been carried out. A report on the results of this study was published in October at Nagoya National University of Technology, Japan English Society Central Branch General Assembly (Secretary and Sponsor) and a joint book entitled "Authors and Publishers of Modern English Literature"(Otohwa Tsurumi Bookstore) was published in 2016.
