本研究の目的は、南北戦争の時代を生きた詩人たちの戦争詩を通して、アメリカン・ピューリタニズムおよびアメリカ共和主義を基盤とするアメリカ文化の表層とは異質の隠れた面を解明・分析しようとするものである。本申請研究では、19世紀中葉のピューリタン的伝統の色濃いアメリカ東部社会の宗教的文化が、戦争中、詩人の表現に及ぼした影響について確認する上で、特にマサチューセッツ州アマーストの町で用いられた賛美歌集に注目し、その表現がアマーストの詩人ディキンソンの詩の表現にどのように反映されているかを分析した。主なる資料のひとつとして1834年に出版され、ディキンソンの時代にアマーストの教会で使用されたIsaac Wattsの讃美歌集を用いた。今回の研究実積の第一点としては、Wattsの賛美歌集において信仰生活の苦難のあり方を戦いのモチーフを用いて表現する、聖書的表現例をいくつも確認したことにより、ディキンソンが戦争前にすでに戦いのモチーフを用いていることとの直接的な関係は断定できないものの、そうした表現を用いる文化的な土壌が南北戦争前の東部社会にあったことをディキンソンの日常生活の場において捉えたことである。第二点としては、南北戦争中においてディキンソンが聖書的常套句ともいえるこの「戦い」の表現を、個人の観点および懐疑を表すために、その本来の用法とは異なる方法で使用していることを確認した点である。「戦い」のモチーフを扱う上で、文化的・時代的な背景と一詩人の表現との関連性および乖離点を、当時の表現の重層性の貴重な一例として確認したことである。
