项目摘要

本研究の目的は、19世紀のアメリカ南北戦争の時代を生きた詩人たちの戦争詩を通して、アメリカン・ピューリタニズムおよびアメリカ共和主義を基盤とするアメリ文化の表層とは異質の隠れた面を解明・分析しようとするものである。本申請研究ではニュー・イングランドのピューリタン信仰のなかで受け継がれてきた「戦い」の表現を、19世紀の牧師の説教に使われている事例を基に調査・検証しつつ、それらの例が南北戦争中の詩人の表現といかに結びつき、また戦争中の詩人の表現に影響を及ぼしているかを分析しようとするものである。今回の研究実績の第一点としては、アマースト大学学長ウィリアム.A.スターンズの1861年の説教、および1863年に戦死した彼の息子フレーザー・スターンズの追悼集において、旧約聖書の戦いのモチーフがいかに戦争の大義を認めるうえで用いられているか、そして実際に従軍した若者の書簡においてもそれがいかに反映されているかを確認したことである。第二点は、先の第一点との比較により、同じアマーストで暮らした詩人エミリ・ディキンソンが戦地にいるT.W.ヒギンソンに送った書簡・詩の表現において、聖書の救済についての彼女自身の懐疑の念を表すために、その本来の用法を打ち消す形で使用していることを分析した点である。文化的・時代的な背景と一詩人の表現との関連性および乖離点を、当時の表現の重層性の貴重な一例として確認したことになる。
