本研究の目的は、19世紀のアメリカ南北戦争の時代を生きた詩人たちの戦争詩を通して、アメリカン・ピューリタニズムおよびアメリカ共和主義を基盤とするアメリカ文化の表層とは異質の隠れた面を解明・分析しようとするものである。本申請研究では、南北戦争に対するニュー・イングランドの人々の複層的な視点に留保しながら、戦争中の詩人の詩および書簡における表現がどのように時代の言説と関わっているかを分析しようとするものである。今回の研究実績の第一点としては、ピューリタン信仰の牙城ともいえるアマースト大学の学長ウィリアム.A.スターンズがアマーストの人々に出征を促した1861年の説教、および1863年に戦死した彼の息子フレーザー・スターンズが父親に遺した書簡の表現に見られる信仰と戦争との関わりとともに、同じアマーストに住む詩人エミリ・ディキンソンがボストンのユニテリアン派の牧師・黒人奴隷廃止論者でもあった文芸批評家T.W.ヒギンソンに送った一連の書簡および詩とを併せて読むことにより、一詩人が時代の言説といかに関わり、またいかに抗おうとしたか、その重要な例を確認したことである。第二点は、先の第一点との関連により、詩人ディキンソンが戦地にいるヒギンソンに送った詩、特に、他者に送られた数少ない戦争に関連した詩において、戦時における「生」と「死」の主題を扱ううえでの彼女自身の宗教的な懐疑、およびその表現上の特徴を分析・解釈することにより、文化・時代的な背景と一詩人の表現との関連性および乖離点の興味深い一例を確認したことにあるいえる。
