研究代表者は、研究対象地域であるスリ・クセトラの世界遺産範囲内の全ての村で約3週間にわたり研究調査を実施した。この調査によって、考古学的な遺産と地域住民の関係について明らかになった。地域住民は、ピュー時代の遺跡、寺院、村、湖などに纏わる伝承を多く継承しており、それは、地元から発見・発掘された文化財によって確かなものと捉えられている。また、重要な門、古い寺院のある場所、湖などの拠点地域は、ナッと言う精霊によって守られており、そこでは、霊媒を呼んで一年に度大きな儀礼が行われる。また、個別に車やオートバイなどを購入した後や男子の得度式の前にご加護を求めて祈りを捧げる。ミャンマーでは、一般的に仏教が精霊信仰より重要であると考えられているが、ここでは、他の地域よりもナッ信仰の重要度が高く、僧侶でさえもナッに敬意を払っていることが明らかになった。世界遺産登録後に地域社会に大きな変化はないが、緩やかではあるが、新築する建物の高さや色の指定は課されている。これに関してはあまり大きな不満は聞かれなかったが、期待したほど観光開発による利益が得られず、このことに関して当局が何もしてくれないという不満も聞かれた。研究代表者は、どのようにしたら観光開発を推進できるかを地域住民と意見交換し、アンコールの事例などを紹介した。フィールドスクールの考古学者や世界遺産事務所のスタッフたちは、本調査研究に大変協力的だったので、意見交換、情報や地図などの収集も予想以上の成果が得られた。地域住民と管理当局との関係には大きな問題はなく、多くの会合が既に持たれていた。一部当局に批判的な住民もいたので、住民側からの意見や要望は当局に口頭と文書(帰国後に報告書を文化省、考古学フィールドスクール、世界遺産事務所に送付)で伝え、その一部は既に改善されたことが、平成28年2月に私費で行った調査により明らかになった。
