本研究は、新会計基準により明らかとなった、学校法人(私立大学)が保有する「特定資産」に着目し、内部留保の割合など、従来の会計基準では導き出すことができなかった数値を解明することにより大学の財務的な安定度や経営基盤の実態を示すことを目的として実施した。つまり、学校法人がいかなる財務的な意思決定を行い、資産構成を構築し、経営行動をとっているかを検証した。方法としては、財務情報を公開している私立大学法人663法人を対象とし、平成27年度から平成29年度までの3カ年の決算数値をデータ化し、資産規模の推移、資産構成割合の分析を行った。この分析フローにおいては、我が国の学校法人が全体でどれだけの金融資産を保有しているのかというマクロ的な視点と、各学校法人がその規模や地域性等の特性においてどのような資産構成を意思決定に基づいて構築しているのかというミクロ的な視点の二つの側面から分析した。その結果、我が国の学校法人が保有する金融資産としての特定資産は当該対象期間において3カ年連続で増加し、規模としては25兆円にのぼる資産を保有していることがわかった。しかし、総体的には増加しているものの、各学校法人別に分析すると、多様な現象が存在していることがわかり、結果として総資産に占める特定資産の割合に応じて、財政状況にも大きな違いが存在することがわかった。また、地域別に分析すると、南関東をはじめとするいわゆる首都圏が安定的な財務基盤を構成していることは推測の範囲内ではあったが、個別にはそれぞれの特徴が存在していることが解明された。そして、多様な状況を勘案したうえで、「特定資産は常時、総資産の20～30%程度の割合で保有し、中長期計画における事業遂行において具体的な計画が発生した段階でその数年前より割合の比率をあげ、計画実行前に総資産の30～40%程度となるような資産構成を構築する」ことが望ましいモデルであると結論づけた。
