これまでの研究で、主に古墳時代までの漁労技術の変遷が示され、その背景として何点か指摘されているが、いずれも従来型の農業生産主体の社会発展という枠組みの中に納まっている。これは、先行研究が主として漁具の分析のみに拠っているためと考えられる。本研究では、漁具に加えて漁労に携わった集落(以下、漁労集落)に着目し、漁労集落の他の生産部門との関係や、その変遷過程を検討することで、従来とは異なる漁労技術変遷の背景を明らかにすることを目的とする。漁具については、帰属時期について注意を払い、漁具の変遷過程について再検討を行った。漁労集落については、2地域を分析対象とし、漁具をはじめとする生産用具が集落内のどの時期に、どの場所に分布するかを押さえた。研究を進めた結果、漁労技術が小規模なものから大規模なものへという単純な発展過程をたどるのではない点を確認した。漁労集落の分析では、弥生時代後期～古墳時代前期に、漁具が特定の集落に分布し、集落内でも特定箇所に集中する傾向を読み取ることができた。この傾向は古墳時代中期～後期でも同様であるため、弥生・古墳時代を通して漁労集落のあり方は似たかたちであった可能性が高い。また、漁具の特定箇所への集中は、一貫して漁労が地域内・集落内で役割分担されていたことを示している。さらに、漁労が限られた集落・集団で行われたのは、漁労による生産品が自家消費のためではなく、交易を目的とした「特産品」であったためと考えた。農具など一部の生産用具についても同様の傾向はみられることから、漁労以外の生産部門でも交易主体の生産活動が行われていたものと思われる。よって漁労技術の変遷は、交易主体の社会において需要の変化に連動したものと考えた。
