项目摘要

後鳥羽上皇は、日本史の大きな転換点である承久の変との関わりなどの政治史的な側面だけでなく、和歌や蹴鞠などの文化史的な様々な分野にも大きな足跡を残している。水無瀬離宮は、この後鳥羽上皇が、とりわけ愛好した離宮であるといっても過言ではない。しかし、この離宮はその著名さにも関わらず、その全体構造に関する具体的な考察がなされていなかった。私は、平成20年よりこの水無瀬離宮に関して、文献史料・発掘調査成果・航空写真・地籍図・古図・地形図などの分析やフィールドワークを進めてきた。その結果、水無瀬離宮の位置や構造に関して輪郭を明らかにしつつある。また、従来知られていなかった園池の跡と考えられるものも航空写真の分析から新たに発見した。そして地籍図や航空写真から当時の水無瀬離宮を中心とした街区の地割の推定復元も試みた。そのような考察の結果、後鳥羽上皇にとっての水無瀬離宮(水無瀬殿)には巨視的にみて三つの変遷過程があることや、この離宮は単なる別荘という次元のものではなく、本御所、新御所、南御所(薗殿)などの御所群や上皇の御願寺である水無瀬御堂(蓮華寿院)、さらには廷臣の宿所群などから構成される都市的な構造を有するものであったこと、現在もその地割りの一部が残存すること、その関連施設は大阪府島本町東南部の桜井方面にまで展開していたことなどを指摘した。平成22年に学術振興会から科学研究費の補助金を活用することによって、これまでの研究成果を政治史、文学史、芸能史、経済史、宗教史などの側面からさらに補強することができ、離宮の機能面にも考察を深めることができた。従来の研究では、後鳥羽上皇の水無瀬離宮を都市的な観点で考察したものはなかった。水無瀬離宮を中心とした都市としての水無瀬の復元を行うことは、水無瀬を日本の都市史の中に明確に位置づけることになり、今後の日本の都市史研究の上で大きな意味を有するように思われる。この水無瀬離宮の復元的研究は、歴史学や国文学という学術分野だけでなく、高校などにおける歴史教育や古典文学の教育にも大きな影響を与えることであろう。さらにこの研究成果を、地域のためにも活用していきたいと考えている。
