平成24年度は、鎌倉時代の平安京近郊における離宮としての院の御所(これも一種の山荘である)や有力貴族の山荘(水辺のものも当時は山荘と称している)に関して広がりという観点から考察し、さらにこれを庭園史の流れに位置付けることによって後世の庭園との連続性を考えることを目的として研究を行った。そのための研究方法は、現地踏査、文献調査、発掘調査成果に関する調査、地籍図や古図の調査などである。そして、このような研究の成果として、次のような点を考えることができた。平安時代の前期から中期にかけては、広大な庭園を有する邸宅であっても基本構造は単体の邸宅であったといえる。これに対し院政期の鳥羽殿や法住寺殿のような上皇の離宮は、複数の御所群や上皇の御堂という邸宅や寺院の集合体となり、個々の邸宅における庭園だけでなく集合体全体として大きな園池を有するようになる。鎌倉時代前半期の水無瀬離宮になると、御所群や御堂から構成される集合体としての中核区域(この内部にも庭園がある)のさらに外部の山側に、地形絶勝の場所を選んで眺望のための山上御所という山荘施設が造営されている。水無瀬離宮では、このような中核区域とその外部に存在する山荘施設とを結びつけることによって、風景をつなぎ地域一帯を広大な庭園とするような構造になったと考えられる。承久の変後、西園寺家、九条家等の山荘として整備された円明寺山荘や、西園寺公経、実氏父子によって営まれ後嵯峨上皇の離宮的なものともなった吹田山荘(吹田殿)、後宇多上皇の伏見殿も、山荘施設を分散させさらにこれを連携させることによって広範な地域を庭園とするような構造であった可能性が高い。鎌倉時代末期から室町時代にかけて禅宗寺院で育まれた地域一帯を庭園とみなす「境致」のような庭園思想には、中国渡来の思想とともに、鎌倉時代における院の御所や有力貴族の山荘などにみられる、山荘施設を分散させ風景をつなぎ広域的な地域を庭園とするようなあり方が影響を与えているのではないだろうか。このような構造が江戸時代における後水尾上皇の岩倉御所や修学院離宮にも継承されている可能性も考えることができた。
