本研究では、1.英国日本協会、ケンブリッジ大学図書館、フランス国立ギメ東洋美術館所蔵の各日本古写真コレクションの調査、2.インターネットを介した日本古写真のメタデータ収集ツールの開発、3.長崎大学附属図書館所蔵の「幕末・明治期日本古写真コレクション」に含まれるアルバム68冊の古写真に付されている番号及び標題のデータ採取を行った。1の調査の結果、日本古写真の電子化とインターネット公開は、各所蔵機関において必ずしも優先順位が高くなく、他の貴重資料ほど進んでいないことが分かった。世界最大の日本古写真コレクションを有するギメ東洋美術館も例外ではないが、総合目録データベース形成に向けた協力については合意を得た。英国日本協会では、所蔵する日本古写真のインターネット公開の準備が整いつつあるが、これら1,675点の画像リスト及び中核48点の詳細なメタデータを入手した。2で開発したツールは、長崎大学附属図書館の「幕末・明治期日本古写真メタデータ・データベース」にリンクしており、インターネットを介し、パスワードによりログインして使用する。同データベースの個々の古写真の下に、画像・番号・標題において類縁関係にあると考えられる他機関所蔵古写真のメタデータを収集することが可能である。3で採取したデータは、上記「幕末・明治期日本古写真メタデータ・データベース」に新たに追加する総合目録的機能のなかで、同データベースに反映させる予定である。本機能は、画像・番号・標題の類縁性により、データベース内の古写真をリンクづけるものであり、これを他機関所蔵の古写真へ拡げることで、総合目録データベースの形成が可能となる。本研究の意義は、特に海外の日本古写真研究者や収集者により、構築の必要性が指摘されている幕末・明治期日本古写真総合目録データベースについて、実現に向けた現状調査と準備作業を行ったことにある。
