本研究では、世代間の経済的格差が拡大し、生き方についての価値観が多元化する少子高齢時代の日本社会において、高齢期を迎える人びとが自らの家族とどのような関係を取り結びながら生活しているのか、その関わりのあり様は高齢者にどのような充足感をもたらすものか、またもたらさないとするならばそれに必要な方策とはどのようなものであるかについて探るため、2004年の中越地震の災害復興地である新潟県長岡市山古志地域を中心に文化人類学的研究を行った。具体的には、聞き取りおよび参与観察調査を実施することから、山古志地域における個々の高齢者の家族間関係-近隣の家関係-地域復興支援員(中越大地震復興基金の運用により、住民主体による集落運営を支援することを目的に設置された制度)の三者関係に焦点を当て、高齢者の家族観を探った。当地域は、震災後の若年人口の流出により、家族と離れて地域に残り一人や夫婦のみで暮らすことを選択した高齢者も少なくない。2005年に内閣府が実施した「高齢者の生活と意識に関する国際比較調査」によると、日本の高齢者の心の支えは、家族、とりわけ配偶者と子どもに集中しているとの報告がなされているが、申請者の調査による限り、当地域の高齢者においては、家族、とりわけ子どもと離れて暮らす高齢者が家族や地域からの孤立に対する不安が生じにくい生活環境創出の工夫が観察された。それは、地域の災害復興プロセスにおいて、様々なイベントや活動が住民主体で運営され、地域の人たちと関わりを持つ機会が日常的に創出されていることによるものと考えられる。このことから、高齢者の家族観は、個々の人が取り結ぶ近隣関係や地域の各種サービスへのアクセスに大きく影響を受ける可能性が指摘され、今後の調査の継続により、高齢期の家族観を多世代間関係、および地域社会の各種サービスへのアクセスの問題としてより包括的に考察していくことが望まれる。
