高等学校の現場で行われている環境問題は主として知識で理解させる教育が行われてきた。例えば、地球温暖化の原因の一つとして考えられている社会的ジレンマなど社会の仕組みの中にある複雑な構造の問題を自分の頭でしっかりと考えることができる教育がなされていない。こうした問題を解決する教育手法の一つとしてゲーミングがある。大学生を対象とした広瀬らの研究(2004)で教育効果は実証されている。そして、私は今まで仮想体験型のゲーミングによる環境教育と知識提供型のビデオによる環境教育と教育効果を比較し、教育効果(ゲーミングは教育効果が持続する)に違いがあるという研究を行った(大竹・広瀬, 2005)。また、ゲーミング後にディブリーフィングを行うことで、ゲーミングのみの環境教育と比べて教育効果(ディブリーフィングをすることで教育直後から教育効果がある)に違いがあるという研究を行った(大竹・広瀬, 2005)。さらに、ゲーミング後にディブリーフィングを行うことで、ゲーミングのみの環境教育と比べて教育効果(ディブリーフィングをすることで教育直後か、教育効果がある)に違いがあるのかを研究した(大竹・広瀬, 2007)。今回の研究でディブリーフィングは、ディスカッションする過程で、自分だけの経験だけでなく、他の人との協働で体験したことを共有し、ゲーミングで経験したこともグループ全体で客観視できるようになる有効な教育手法であることが分かった。加えて、高校生においては、教育直後は、ゲーミングによる仮想体験での罪悪感(自分の利益を優先してしまった仮想体験)が一時的に教育効果を妨げる要因になった。しかし、時の経過(本研究では3ヶ月後)によって環境問題を自分のこととして認識できるようになるという教育効果がみられたのである。
