本研究の目的は、国内外における「月・惑星の運動」に関するカリキュラムの系統性や、これまでの「月・惑星の運動」の学習の実践を分析し、その特質の知見を踏まえて、日本の小・中・高校生における「月・惑星の運動」に関する認職の実態を解明し、「月・惑星の運動」に関する教授法の開発、試行および評価を行い、学習方略の開発の視点を解明することである。研究方法では、小・中・高校生における「月・惑星の運動」の認識についてのアンケート調査及びインタビュー調査を行った。児童・生徒が持つ「月の満ち欠け」、「金星の満ち欠け」、「食現象」、「惑星の視運動」に関する認識の特質を、これらの調査から明らかにした。中・高校生の食現象に関する調査からは、日食と月食の混同、または月の満ち欠け現象と食現象の混同、なびに食現象におけるかげのしくみの認識の低さが明らかとなった。小学校の授業実践では、様々な物体にできる影の形の観察、太陽と月に見立てたライトとボールによる反射物と陰の再現、ならびに児童自らが太陽、月、地球役を行い、3者の相対的な位置関係の再現から、月の満ち欠けの表現活動等の授業実践を行うことで、4割程度であった月の満ち欠け現象に関する理解度が、授業後には約9割へと大幅に増加した。中学校では、金星の望遠鏡での継続的観察や、金星の満ち欠けや大きさの変化を調べるための回転円盤と光源・ボールを用いたモデル化、ならびに星座の中を移動していく金星を、地球・金星のモデルと星座図を使用し表現する活動、ならびに、高等学校では、惑星の視運動に関して、宇宙の広がりを認識させるための星座を三次元的に表現する星座空間モデルや、教室全体を使用した惑星の見え方観察モデルを生徒が自作し、観察体験を通じて、空間認織の形成を図る授業実践を行った結果、多くの生徒に「月・惑星の運動」に関連する視点移動能力や空間認識能力の高まりが確認できた。
