中心的な作業は,『瑜伽師地論』声聞地の解読と初期経典あるいは有部系論書との比較検討を通して,実践論の形成過程あるいは瑜伽行派の起源に関わる考察を試みたことである。その作業の端緒として具体的に『瑜伽師地論』声聞地における瑜伽師yogacaraという語の用例に当たり,改めてその性格・意義を確認してきたが,以下のことが導き出された。従来,議論されてきた「瑜伽行」か「瑜伽師」かという問題に関説すれば,全用例において例外なく,瑜伽の主体者の意味で使用され,文法的には複合語の有財釈Bahubrihi(Possessive Compound)に解釈され「瑜伽師」が妥当である。それは,bhiksuあるいはyoginと併記されることからも伺われる。また梵文でのyogacaraの用例数は,実際には声聞地においても限られた箇所にしか見出されないが,使用される文脈のほとんどは所縁作意を主題とするもので,不浄観,奢摩他・毘鉢舎那あるいは心一境性の獲得とも深く結び付いている。また初修業の瑜伽師を前提に論述されている場合が目立つが,これは声聞地が作意に臨む初修業者への指南書的性格を持つことを意味すると思われる。さらに声聞地における瑜伽師の修行階梯が,基本的に有部系の実践階梯と同種の構造を共有しているが,その三賢位以降の修習者はその境位の深浅に関係なく瑜伽師と呼称されている点を確認した。また,声聞地制作者が,瑜伽師の在り方を世尊以来の初期経典の伝統の中に位置付けようとする意図も窺知された。また,瑜伽師をキーワードとして,筆者なりに国内での研究動向を逐一再検討してみたところ,瑜伽行派という学派名の由来でもあるこの一群が,単に瑜伽行派内の起源問題に留まらず,大乗仏教興起の事情に関わる従来の説に変更を与え得る存在として注目されることが,改めて確認された。これに関しては,さらに継続的な攻究を試みたい。
